SAKC Board of Directors

The SAKC Board of Directors is the highest governing body of your Student Association; all major decisions that affect YOU, the members, are made by the Board. They are your voice!

This year (2022-23) the board consists of 9 students and 2 ex-officio staff members.

Scheduled Board Meetings

The SAKC Board of Directors meets once a month during the academic year (September to April) and as needed during the summer months (May to August).If you have any topics you would like the Board to discuss please reach out to your Student President Jason Smith by emailing him at president@sakc.ca

Term:

A Directors term begins on May 1st and runs for one year until April 30th.

Elections are held once a year (typically in March) for all 11 seats. If a minimum of 9 seats are not filled the Board will request a by election to be held in the upcoming Fall term.

About Me: My name is Jason Smith, I am a second-year International Business Administration-Management Student. I am a sports scholarship student. Last year, I served on SAKC as a director and I have plenty of experience in leadership through sports and academia.

Program: Business Administration Management (Year 2)

What I will do for you: For the 2022-2023 academic year, my ultimate goal is to create a better relationship between the college and the (SA) to provide more meaningful interactions and quality education that are relevant for the future of our community and the world at large.

What I will do for you: It is my obligation as your new Vice President to advocate on your behalf and ensure that your voices are heard. Through availability, accountability, creativity, integrity, and confidentiality, I will create and sustain positive relationships with the student body. As we start a new fall semester, I hope that you will remain focused and motivated to achieve all your goals. I encourage one another to cultivate a community free of prejudice and discrimination, as well as to establish a respectful, civil, supportive, and safe campus climate. These core values allow us to provide a learning environment where we can all pursue our dreams and reach our highest potential.

About Me: My name is Chirleen Wisdom-Drysdale from the beautiful island of Jamaica. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, where I have spent 13 years in the classroom teaching from kindergarten to fourth grade. I am married with two wonderful and amazing children.

Program: Business Administration Management (Year 2)

What I will do for you: As an educator, education is important to me. Having the right environment is essential for effective learning to take place. Therefore, as your VP of Academics, it is my duty to assist students with academic appeals and work to resolve issues that students are facing here at Keyano College. I will be meeting regularly with the Keyano Academic Council to review and give feedback on proposed curriculum and program changes. I support the holistic development of individuals and therefore believe that each person’s voice should be heard.

What I will do for you: I firmly believe that the students are at the heart of the association; hence, their needs and interests MUST be catered for and represented. As your Vice President of Student Affairs, it is my intention to use my talents and creativity, be empathetic, commit my time and efforts to actively listen to your concerns and make every effort to represent you fairly.

SAKC Executive Council

The SAKC Executive Council is an elected team of 4 student leaders who represent and advocate for all Keyano students. They are also responsible for approving policies and overseeing the management of all SAKC student services and initiatives.

President

The SAKC President is an elected student advocate who represents the Keyano student body at large. The President helps shape the student experience and ensures the board is advancing the mission and vision of the Students’ Association of Keyano College (SAKC). The President acts as the official liaison with the College and is the primary spokesperson for the SAKC Board. The President is the liaison for any provincial, federal or municipal government related issues.

The VP Academics

The Vice President of Academics is responsible for all advocacy related to academic issues at Keyano College. The Vice-President of Academics works closely with the leaders, staff and administration at the College to ensure that members receive the best possible education and educational experience at Keyano College; some departments include the Office of the Registrar, Academic Council and Faculty Association. The Vice President will sit on Academic council as a committee member.

VP Operations and Finance

The Vice-President (VP) Operations & Finance oversees the annual budget and operations of the SAKC and is the chairperson for the operations and finance committee. They are also responsible for the administration of the SAKC Health and Dental plan. The Vice President, Operations & Finance is an elected student position responsible for the administration of the association in conjunction with the President and in accordance with relevant by-laws, including administration and finance policies, and procedures. The Vice-President Operations & Finance is accountable to the President of SAKC, and all SAKC Members

VP Student Affairs

The Vice-President (VP) of Student-Affairs will coordinate events to enhance student experience at Keyano College and is the chairperson for the Membership Engagement Committee. The VP of Student-Affairs will be in charge of planning, preparing, and coordinating a variety of social, educational, and family events. The VP of Student Affairs will promote the activities of the SAKC throughout the year. The VP of Student affairs also advocates on behalf of SAKC Members on non-academic related issues. The Vice President also works closely with the following Keyano College departments: housing, security, wellness, student life, and internationalization on campus.

SAKC Directors

The role of the SAKC Director is to contribute as fully as possible to the Board efforts as it carries out its mandate to achieve its mission and goals.

Directors represent and govern on behalf of students. Being a director is a great way to become involved in student life at Keyano College. It is also a great way to make new connections both on and off campus. It is an opportunity to make a difference on campus.

Expectations of Directors:

  • Attending all meetings of the Board, and other expected functions
  • Bringing issues regarding the interests of the Membership to the Board so that they may be discussed.
  • Participating in committee work on an equitable basis
  • Providing direction to the Executive Council

As a Director, it is important for you to engage with your fellow students. We encourage the Directors to speak with students both in and out of your classroom in order to gain a broad overview of what all students are facing while studying at Keyano College.

How to Join and Be Involved

If you are interested in:

  • ensuring that student concerns and suggestions are heard and brought forward
  • lobbying for the right of students,
  • helping organize events,
  • enhancing the overall student experience while at Keyano
  • being a member of a SAKC committee
